The memorial service held at Schutte Park by staff and students from Caesar Rodney and Dover high schools for two schoolmates who died tragically in a car accident was a loving and kind gesture. It was refreshing to see such a diversity of people coming together and sharing their loss.
However, we were saddened by the plastic balloons that were released. We all need to remember that these balloons will eventually fall back to Earth and, especially in Delaware, into the ocean. Faculty and, especially, administrators should be more mindful of the impact of balloons on the environment and encourage students to come up with alternate ways to honor their classmates.
Planting trees, creating a garden or purchasing equipment for their school will endure longer than these environmentally harmful balloons.
