July 4 fire in Camden ruled accidental

CAMDEN — A fire that destroyed a home Tuesday night was determined to be accidental, the State Fire Marshal’s office announced Wednesday.

Around 10:30 p.m., the fire started in the 400 block of Apple Blossom Drive near Walnut Shade Road, according to spokesperson Michael Chionchio. The Camden-Wyoming Fire Company arrived on the scene with flames engulfing the two-story house.

Deputy fire marshals were called to the scene to investigate, where it was determined that spent fireworks placed inside of a trashcan on the exterior of the home were the cause of the blaze, Mr. Chionchio said.

The items inside the trashcan ignited and burned up the exterior of the home into the interior.

The State Fire Marshal’s office determined fire damage amounted to $250,000. The American Red Cross was requested to provide emergency assistance for one adult and one child.  One firefighter was taken to Bayhealth Kent Campus Hospital for medical evaluation.
