How do you feel about the defund provision?

Posted

A section of the “Big Beautiful Bill” will prohibit federal Medicaid payments to nonprofits that serve low-income, underserved individuals if the agencies furnish family-planning services, reproductive health and related care. This includes Planned Parenthood, which is decrying the move. While a preliminary injunction has blocked the provision, it’s only temporary. What are your thoughts about the Trump administration canceling Medicaid reimbursements in these cases? How do you think patients and providers will respond?

  • Does this include sex changes and pregnancy? If so, I don’t think dollars should go toward either one of these, unless the money goes directly to birth control. — Pamela Warner
  • Planned Parenthood doesn’t use federal funds for abortion because of the Hyde Amendment, so everyone who is saying that is inaccurate. The reduction in funding for family planning and reproductive care services is a reason why we have the highest maternal mortality rate in the developed world. This will worsen that. So much for being the pro-family party. — Emily Green
  • For a long time, we have been hearing about how Medicare, Medicaid and Social Security will run out of funds by a certain year. When a president finally proposes sensible, legitimate cuts to help bring the programs back into solvency, there is an uproar. We have to expect some pain along the way. No one will get everything they want, despite the tempting promises of some politicians. — Ellen Hart Richardson
  • Planned Parenthood isn’t being “defunded.” It is still in the business of providing abortions, but it is no longer receiving taxpayer money. You don’t remember when Obamacare first came out? Barack Obama promised not to use taxpayer money for abortions. We all know he lied because, before he left office, he reinstated it. Nongovernmental organizations and these “charities” should not receive any taxpayer money. I never saw the Daily State News report on the $250 million food scam in Minnesota. How about the Stacey Abrams’ NGO that couldn’t raise more than $100? Right before Joe Biden left office, $2 billion was given to her. — Rick Kerchevall
  • So, when you take out the anti-Trump fear-mongering and see the facts, it means that Planned Parenthood will no longer get paid with federal funds if it performs abortions. Sounds about right to me. Use your personal funds to get an abortion, not taxpayers’ money. That’s the simple explanation. If you can’t afford an abortion on your own salary, then use protection and don’t get pregnant. — Melissa Stewart
