DOVER — A 37-year-old Dover man has been arrested on weapons and related charges following an officer-involved shooting June 11, Dover Police spokesman Master Cpl. Ryan Schmid said today.

Tyrone Kersey was shot by police during an incident on June 10 in the 400 block of Sussex Avenue, authorities said. He was treated at the scene and transported to the Christiana Health System, police said.

Mr. Kersey was charged with possession of a firearm during the comission of a felony, aggravated menacing, first-degree reckless endangering (two counts), resisting arrest with force of violence, endangering the welfare of a child and offensive touching. He was arraigned and placed in the custody of the Delaware Department of Correction.

According to authorities, detectives determined that after an initial call for trespassing, Mr. Kersey engaged in a verbal argument with a 32-year-old female of Dover. Prior to police arrival, the dispute turned physical when Kersey pushed her to the ground, police said.

As police arrived on the scene, Cpl. Schmid said, Mr. Kersey produced a handgun and began shouting at officers. He refused to follow police commands to put the firearm down and get on the ground, police said.

Instead, Mr. Kersey fired one shot from his firearm into a parked vehicle that was now occupied by the 32-year-old female and a 1-year-old child, police said.

Mr. Kersey then pulled the female from the vehicle while she was holding the child in her arms, police said. Authorities said Mr. Kersey continued to refuse commands from officers and began pulling the victims toward a residence.

During this movement, Mr. Schmid said, and due to the escalating threat to everyone present, Mr. Kersey was shot by police.

Mr. Kersey was treated on scene, transported to Bayhealth Kent Campus, and was later transferred to the Christiana Healtwh System.

Cpl. Schmid said the Dover Police Department will continue to investigate the incident in coordination with the Delaware Department of Justice’s– Division of Civil Rights and Public Trust.
