DOVER – Dover High is apparently going back to the drawing board in its search for a new football coach.

The Capital School Board approved a candidate for the position as its monthly meeting last Wednesday. That candidate had been recommended by a search committee.

The candidate was not named in public session and his appointment was pending his acceptance of the job.

But now the opening is posted again on Capital’s website with a closing date of March 4.

It is believed that former NFL linebacker Jamie Duncan was the person that the board approved.  The 40-year-old Christiana High grad could not be reached for comment.

Lake Forest High coach Freddie Johnson is widely thought to be one of the top candidates for the Dover job. He is a former coach at Dover’s Central Middle School.

On Thursday, though, Johnson said he had not been offered the Dover position.

Dover is looking for a replacement for Dante Jones, who coached the Senators the last three seasons.

Jones led Dover to an overall record of 16-16 with a 9-9 mark in the Henlopen Conference Northern Division and one Division I state tournament berth.

The Senators, though, have gone through back-to-back losing seasons. They were 2-4 in the North, 4-6 this past season.
