DOVER — The Delaware Journalism Collaborative will host a gubernatorial and a congressional debate with candidates this month, the organization announced Thursday.
The first debate will take place Aug. 14 at the Dover Public Library from 7 to 8:30 p.m. and consist of Delaware’s candidates for governor – Democrats Lt. Gov. Bethany Hall-Long, New Castle County Executive Matt Meyer and former DNREC secretary Collin O’Mara; and Republicans Jerrold A. Price, House Minority Leader Mike Ramone and Bobby Williamson.
The second debate will take place on Aug. 27 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Wilmington Public Library and feature candidates for Delaware’s lone seat in the U.S. House of Representatives: Democrats Earl Cooper, state Sen. Sarah McBride and Elias Weir, and Republicans Donyale Hall and John J. Whalen III.
Due to size constraints, in-person attendance at the debates will be by invitation only, the collaborative announced.
However, each debate will be livestreamed on the Delaware Journalism Collaborative’s Facebook and YouTube pages. Voters can find the collaborative on Facebook at facebook.com/DEJournalismCollab/ to watch either debate, or on YouTube at youtube.com/@DEJournalismCollaborative.
The debates were intentionally scheduled to occur before the Sept. 10 statewide primary election, and each candidate from the Democratic and Republican parties have been invited to participate, the collaborative said.
During each debate, a panel of three journalists - each representing one of the media partners in the Delaware Journalism Collaborative - will rotate taking turns in asking the candidates prepared questions. Each panel will have a moderator responsible for tracking time and coordinating the debate, and questions will not be shared with the candidates ahead of time.
The Delaware Journalism Collaborative’s coalition of 23 independent newsrooms and media organizations statewide will cover the debates, with select organizations broadcasting the events live on their respective social media channels.
