Delaware House, Senate to consider proposals to combat food insecurity Tuesday
By DOVER — Two measures highlighted in Sunday’s edition of the Daily State News’ Seeds of Need series will be considered by state lawmakers on Tuesday.
Upon the General Assembly’s return to Legislative Hall, two bills that aim to tackle food insecurity – one led by Sen. Darius Brown, D-Wilmington, and the other by Reps. Rae Moore, D-Middletown, and Bryan Shupe, R-Milford – will receive final consideration in their respective chambers.
Senate Bill 254’s substitute version would create the Delaware Grocery Initiative and direct the Division of Small Business to study food deserts in urban and rural areas before sending a report to the General Assembly and governor with findings and recommendations.
The bill was substituted Thursday and is on the Senate’s Tuesday agenda. If it passes, it will head to the House of Representatives for consideration.
House Bill 125, which has been substituted twice, would provide free breakfast and lunch to Delaware students who are eligible for federal reduced-price meal programs. The bill is on the House’s Tuesday, and if it passes, will head to the Senate for further consideration.
Both the House and Senate sessions are set to begin at 2 p.m.
