Delaware emergency sirens test is Wednesday

Posted

A quarterly test of New Jersey’s Salem and Hope Creek nuclear generating station’s alert system will be held Wednesday at 7:20 p.m., the Delaware Emergency Management Agency announced.

The test is part of a program that continually monitors the integrity of the siren system. The alarm will be activated for three to five minutes, followed by a test message of the emergency alert system on local radio stations. Sirens tested are the same ones used to notify the public of an actual emergency at either of the stations.

There are 37 sirens in Delaware in a 10-mile radius of the stations. They cover an area north from Delaware City, west to Middletown and south to Woodland Beach.

During an emergency, there would be a series of steady three-to-five-minute siren sounds to alert citizens to turn their radios to an emergency alert system station for critical information.

For information, call the Delaware Emergency Management Agency at 877-729-3362 or 302-659-3362 and ask for Georgina Harris-Sharper or Albert Samah.
