Delaware Community Foundation announces Arsht Cannon Fund grants

The Arsht Cannon Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation has given out $600,000 in grants to Latino-serving nonprofit organizations.

With the mission to provide educational opportunities for Delaware’s Latino families, grants were provided in six categories:

Language and literacy

  • The Lutheran Church of Our Savior’s English as a Second Language Program — $30,000 to support expansion and three leadership positions.
  • Polytech Adult Education’s ESL/family literacy program — $28,000 to support four instructor and two paraprofessional positions.
  • Literacy Delaware — $30,000 to hire a bilingual learner coordinator.

Early childhood through college

  • Read Aloud Delaware’s LENA Start — $38,000 to support a bilingual coordinator position and other costs.
  • Wilmington Children’s Chorus’ events at Aspira’s Early Childhood Development Center — $22,000 to support salaries and other costs.
  • Rodel’s Delaware Readiness Teams — $22,500 for a Hispanic community coordinator position and event support.
  • Academia Antonia Alonso Charter School’s virtual reality program — $37,000 for equipment and training.
  • Reading Assist’s high-dosage tutoring program — $40,000 to support three Fellows at Academia Antonia Alonso Charter School, William C. Lewis Dual Language Elementary School and Las Américas ASPIRA Academy, and to explore partnerships with Sussex County schools with higher Latino populations.
  • Leading Youth Through Empowerment’s college access for underserved youth — $40,000 to support the employment of a bilingual college access advocate.
  • Delaware Futures — $10,000 to hire a bilingual outreach coordinator and support college application and textbook costs.
    Educational advocacy
  • Rodel’s English learner and funding systems community engagement — $40,000 for costs, subgrants and coalition management.

Small-business development education

  • La Plaza Delaware’s training and coaching programs — $70,000 to provide an advanced business training course and business financial coaching, with support for three coaches, a summit and networking events.

Health-related education and coaching

  • Delaware Art Museum’s Healing Through the Arts, a partnership with Mariposa Arts — $33,000 for instructors, consultant fees and supplies for programs via the Latin American Community Center and the Hispanic American Association of Delaware.
  • Down Syndrome Association of Delaware’s outreach to medical providers serving Latino families — $20,000 to support a Spanish outreach coordinator and the development of educational materials in Spanish.
  • Hispanic American Association of Delaware’s Amigo Actias y Saludables Program — $27,000 to support a bilingual coordinator, dance instructor and life skills coach.
  • La Esperanza’s Resource Navigation and Family Coaching Program — $50,000 to support two guides, coordinator services and other costs.

Special initiatives

  • La Esperanza’s La Colectiva — $50,000 to support the co-executive director’s salary and benefits, communications, affinity group support, meetings and mini-grants.
  • Friends of the Route 9 Innovation Center Library’s celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month — $3,000 for performers, food and advertising.
  • Serviam Media’s “United We Are Dreaming” — $3,000 for editing this award-winning production, featuring five Delawareans protected by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.
