The headline on the Daily State News the day after the election reads that there is a “new chapter for Delaware” (Nov. 6). After hearing and watching the national results of the election, is there a new chapter for our state?
If you look at the four pictures on the first page of the paper, you only see Democrats. However, the vast majority of American voters rejected the Democrats and their policies Nov. 5. If you subtract the 82 Electoral College votes of California and New York, Vice President Kamala Harris only gets 144. Now that Nevada and Arizona have gone for President-elect Donald Trump, he will have 312 Electoral College votes and the popular vote. I guess the Boss Tweed machine in New Castle County is working well. The question one really needs to ask is, is that good for our state and, more importantly, our nation?
We elected a former math teacher as our governor. The one and only ad I saw on TV concerning his policies referred to giving middle-class Delawareans a tax cut (really?) and spending more money on education. The public education system in Delaware is in shambles, and he wants to give it more money? That’s a typical Democratic response — throw more money at a problem versus solving the problem. If you were a good math teacher, Mr. Matt Meyer, then you know the problem. However, the real question is, do you have the intestinal fortitude to solve it or will you preserve the status quo and throw more money at our disintegrating educational process?
Democratic U.S. Rep. Lisa Blunt Rochester now heads to the U.S. Senate. She was nothing more than a straight Democratic vote in Congress, so how will she be different in the Senate? The Republicans now control the Senate, so will you truly be bipartisan and vote to solve the tremendous problems inflicted on our nation by the Biden-Harris administration or will you continue the “fight,” as outlined by Ms. Harris in her nonconcession speech?
Ms. Sarah McBride, you will now represent Delaware in the U.S. House of Representatives, as a Democrat. I suspect your policy positions will be those outlined on Page 10 of the Nov. 6 paper, especially since you were once the national spokesperson for our country’s largest LGBTQ+ rights organization. Will you support mutilating children, many without the consent of their parents? Will you push for boys in girls’ sports? Will you continue the Democratic support for diversity, equity and inclusion? And will you be a hard Democratic vote that will kill every Republican attempt to change those disastrous problems inflicted on our nation by Biden-Harris? Or will you be bipartisan and understand what the American voter said Nov. 5?
I understand the front page of the Nov. 6 paper and the captions written under each photo. However, I look at that page from a different perspective. Does that make me garbage, homophobic, a Nazi or a deplorable? If you voted for the four individuals on the front page, I hope that you don’t think that way, but during the runup to the election, that’s all I heard from Democrats. The surprising part is that I am a registered independent, who voted for Trump.
If Delaware is going to change, the Republican Party is going to need an incredibly strong state leader, who will be able to coalesce the three county leaders. Short of that, nothing will change in 2026. Until someone chooses to rise to the occasion, which will be extraordinarily difficult because a lot of egos and toes will be smashed, the Election Day 2026 front page of our newspaper will have only Democratic faces.
