NEW CASTLE — A season ago, Wilmington University’s softball team put together a season it will never forget.

After battling out of the losers’ bracket in their conference tournament, the Wildcats ended up making the program’s first appearance in the NCAA Division II World Series.

Now Wilmington is going to see if it can make some more memories.

The Wildcats, led by former Caesar Rodney High coach Mike Shehorn, are the top seed in the East and will host a four-team regional starting on Thursday.

Wilmington (40-14) will face No. 8 St. Thomas Aquinas (33-22) on Thursday at 11 a.m. No. 4 Assumption (23-14) will take on No. 5 St. Anselm (25-22) in the second game.

The double-elimination tourney continues on Friday before finishing up on Saturday. The tournament winner advances to a best-of-three super regional.
The Wildcats’ roster includes five former Henlopen Conference players and a dozen in-state players overall.

A pair of former Smyrna High standouts, Sara Miller and Lexi Moore, are both batting .380. Miller has a team-leading 10 home runs and 58 RBI while Moore is second on the squad with 46 runs and 38 stolen bases.

Wilmington won its fifth CACC tournament title after the finals were rained out. The Wildcats were awarded the championship as the highest remaining seed.

Hens land Va. Tech transfer

John Camden has already done some traveling in his basketball career.

The Downingtown, Pa. native has attended a New Hampshire prep school and played for both Memphis and Virginia Tech.

Now the 6-foot-8 forward has decided he’s headed for Delaware.

ESPN reported that Camden is transferring to UD, making him the Hens’ third transfer addition in the last couple weeks. Delaware has also picked up a pair of guards in 6-foot-4 Tahron Allen (Wagner) and 6-foot-5 Erik Timko (Jefferson University).

Like Delaware coach Martin Ingelsby, Camden has roots in the Philadelphia Catholic League. He played at Cardinal O’Hara High before finishing his high school career at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire.

Coming out of high school, he also had offers from Florida, Miami and Syracuse.

Camden played in 37 games over two seasons at Virginia Tech. He netted a career-high nine points in a game against Auburn.

In high school, Rivals rated Camden as a four-star recruit and the 90th-best player in the country.

Allen tallied a game-high 22 points in Wagner’s 54-47 win over Merrimack in the NEC championship game. He was named the tourney MVP after averaging 18.3 ppg and 6.0 rebounds in three games.

The Seahawks then beat Howard in the first round of the NCAA Tournament before falling to top-seeded North Carolina. Allen averaged 10.5 points and 5.1 rebounds for the season.

Allen spent his first two seasons with Monmouth, which is a member of the CAA along with Delaware.

Timko was an NCAA Division II All-American who scored 1,792 points for Philadelphia’s Jefferson and averaged 21.1 points in his career.

“Erik is an elite guard prospect who can really stretch the floor and is a perfect fit for our style of play,” said Ingelsby. “He comes from a winning program at Jefferson University where he was an elite scorer and shooter. We look forward to getting him here this summer and acclimated to our program and Blue Hen culture.”
