Barrera: Support carbon pricing in Delaware's climate plan

Posted

As Delaware moves forward with its 2025 Climate Action Plan, one glaring omission stands out: There is no mention of a carbon-pricing policy. If we are serious about reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change, we must consider carbon pricing as a key tool in our strategy.

Carbon pricing works by assigning a cost to carbon emissions, encouraging businesses and individuals to transition to cleaner energy sources. This market-based approach has been successful in many places, reducing emissions while stimulating innovation in renewable energy and energy efficiency. By putting a price on pollution, we create an economic incentive to cut emissions, ultimately leading to a healthier environment and a more sustainable future.

Delaware is one of the most climate-vulnerable states in the nation, facing rising sea levels, stronger storms and increased flooding. Without a strong policy to curb emissions, these issues will only worsen. Incorporating carbon pricing into the Climate Action Plan would demonstrate true leadership in addressing climate change and ensuring a livable future for all Delawareans.

I urge policymakers and residents to support carbon pricing and advocate for its inclusion in Delaware’s climate strategy. It’s time to hold polluters accountable and take decisive action to protect the state.
