RESPONSES TO QUESTION OF THE WEEK

Are young motorists properly prepared?

Posted

A ConsumerAffairs report recently named Delaware the third-worst state for teen driver safety. Do you think students are well prepared in their drivers’ education classes or should more be done? What are your memories of learning to drive?

  • I think most kids today, like many adults, think they can multitask by switching radio stations, texting or scrolling on phones and watching the road at the same time. Some think they can thread the needle and cut people off without causing car accidents. Many people do not know how to read road signs because they do not obey them, and they don’t use a turn signal. Also, why is everybody always in a hurry? In my opinion, I think many people need to get reeducated on how to drive properly, not just the teen novices. The schools can only teach drivers’ ed classes for a short span — a few weeks in school or a few weeks during the summer. I am sure the rules of driving have been updated since I was in school 20-plus years ago. As for my experience, I was not a willing participant in school drivers’ ed, got myself removed from class and never bothered to learn. Maybe that was the smartest thing I ever did. Just the other day, I saw a woman driving around a corner with her door open and her leg sticking out, with her foot just barely missing the road. If this is how people are driving, then I want no part of it. Yes, people who want to learn should have classes in school or out of school that last longer than a month, ones that teach everything about the car or truck, the care of the vehicle and how to drive, including understanding the road signs and different types of roads, like those circles that were put in. — Tiffany Rumbley
  • This is a yes and no. It’s more that people seem to forget that there is more than one way to get to their destinations. Their destinations are literally not going anywhere, and if they are constantly late or need to be in a hurry to get somewhere, they probably should leave 15-30 minutes sooner than they were expecting to. Or, if it’s really important to you, take the day off work. Take the state fair, for example. I cannot tell you how many times I have heard, “Is this the place for the concert?” at 8:30 p.m., when the concert started at 6:30-7. — Kyle Hendrix
  • More like third-worst drivers overall. There are no skills nor courtesy anymore. Just “Get out of my way. I am on the road.” — Warren Avis
  • Because they only get seven hours of actual driving with the drivers’ ed teacher! — Beverly Ann
  • I have lived and driven in Kent County for over 70 years. I think that every driving teacher should have a simulator and require a number of hours for each student, showing the number of seconds when you take your eyes off the road. — Shirley D. Wood
