DOVER — It’s becoming pretty apparent how opposing teams are going to play defense against Dover High.

Senior shooting guard Jordan Allen has spent most of his games this season with a man in his face for 94 feet, face-guarding him to deny him receiving the ball.

Allen saw that again on Tuesday night against Cape Henlopen but still managed to get his points.

Allen scored 35 points as Dover defeated the Vikings 70-51 in a contest between two teams who entered Tuesday unbeaten against Henlopen Conference Northern Division opposition. The Senators (4-0 North, 4-4 overall) rebounded from a pair of losses at the Slam Dunk to the Beach tournament over the holiday break.

“I just got to focus more,” Allen said of adjusting to seeing that type of defense. “I got to be mentally strong and not get frustrated when they’re grabbing on me and things like that.”

“We wanted to get back on track tonight,” Allen added. “We wanted to do the things we’re used to doing, playing hard every play and trying to get a win.”

“The division is important and the only way we can win the division is by knocking off teams like Cape,” said Dover coach Stephen Wilson. “That’s one of our goals, to win the division. I think the team has realized that if we want to achieve our goals we need to play better defense.”

Allen woke up a sluggish Dover offense with 16 points in the second quarter after the Senators trailed 17-8 at the end of the first. Dover outscored the Vikings 28-13 in the second quarter to take a 36-30 advantage into halftime.

When the third quarter started, Allen picked up right where he left off.

The Rider University commit had the first 10 points of the second half. Meanwhile on the defensive end, the Senators forced four steals on the first five possessions to begin the third.

The last steal was tipped by Allen before he dove to keep the ball inbounds and chucked it back to a teammate. Allen quickly jumped to his feet to follow the play in transition where he was able to score on a tip-in for his 30th point of the night with 5:23 left in the third quarter.

Dover’s defensive effort was increased after the Senators found themselves trailing earlier in the game.

“We knew had to get stops to get back in the game,” Allen said. “They had us down at first so we needed stop after stop.”

The Senators didn’t lead until the 2:49 mark of the second quarter. They went in front when Terrence Woodlin blocked a shot which led to a transition opportunity and a one-handed dunk by Allen on the other end.

Woodlin was a part of a solid performance by the Dover bench. He scored five points and Tre’Vonne Moore had six while Stefan Rush-Wilson netted five, all of whom did not start the game. Thomas Hoskins was Dover’s second-leading scorer with eight.

“I thought our bench came in and did a great job,” Wilson said. “They did what they needed to do and I was real pleased with that.”

Demetrius Price finished with 14 to pace Cape Henlopen, Randy Rickards chipped in 12 and Ian Robertson added nine for the Vikings (3-1 North, 4-5 overall).
