WESTOVER — The Somerset County Health Department has confirmed an adult gray cat found in the 4000 block of Shelltown Road tested positive for rabies.

Health Officer Craig Stofko warns that any person, pet or other animal that may have had contact with this cat could be at risk for rabies exposure.  To report any contact with or exposure to the cat, call Environmental Health at 443-523-1730.

Please report any sick animals and those acting in an unusual manner that come into contact with a person or pet.  If contact is suspected with a pet, do not handle the pet barehanded.  Make sure all pets have a current rabies vaccination.  Do not leave pet food, especially cat food, outdoors.

If a person has been bitten or scratched by a possible rabid animal, he or she should seek immediate medical care.  Post exposure treatment is necessary to prevent rabies.  Rabies is almost always fatal if post exposure is not given.  If a pet has been bitten then contact your veterinarian or Environmental Health.

The final spring rabies clinic for dogs, cats and ferrets is 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 26 at the Fairmount Volunteer Fire Company. The cost is $6 and the vaccine is for one year unless you bring the current vaccination record and then it will be for three years.
