Bells to ring for Constitution Day in Princess Anne

PRINCESS ANNE — If you are in downtown Princess Anne 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 17 pause to hear the change ringing bells of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church as they will be ringing in celebration of Constitution Day.

It was on that day in 1787 when the United States Constitution was signed by the delegates to the Constitutional Convention.

The six bells in the tower, which dates to 1859, were installed and first rung in October 1993 and at the time were the only set of their kind in Maryland. There will be four volunteer bell ringers on the 17th: Betsy Thornton, Ed Goyda, Richard Kirby and Ann Smith.

The tower is on the Church Street side of the church, between Washington and Prince William streets. If you are interested in learning more about becoming a bell ringer contact Ann Smith by email atvaredfieldsmith@yahoo.com.

Constitution Day kicks off Constitution Week, Sept. 17-23, which the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution petitioned to be recognized, being signed into law in 1956 by President Eisenhower.
