PRINCESS ANNE — Members of the Antioch Angel Corps are this year’s recipient of the Del-Mar-Va Council, Boy Scouts of America “Somerset Outstanding Citizen Award.” It will be presented at the annual dinner to be held 6 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10 at the Somerset County Civic Center in Princess Anne.

Consisting of members of Antioch United Methodist Church, the Antioch Angels are a community partner of Chesapeake Housing Mission which serves the Lower Shore. Locally it is best known for placing ramps on the homes of the elderly and handicap, or doing repairs and renovations. It was involved with building the ramp and helping with the addition to the home of Valentina Downing, the Princess Anne woman who is now raising her two grandchildren after they were gravely injured and their mother killed by her estranged boyfriend.

Each summer they take their talent and mission spirit to rural Kentucky to do housing repairs and other charitable work.

“Bottom line, they are making the homes of the less fortunate more livable and secure,” stated a BSA spokesperson. The Antioch Angel Corps “see themselves as servants in the community, caring for their friends and neighbors.”

The Citizen Award dinner is the opportunity for the community’s leadership to gather and celebrate the successes of The Antioch Angels as it recognizes a person or organization that uses the character traits taught in Scouting to make the community a better place.

The event is expected to draw over 200 people and raise over $20,000 to help support scouting programs and services. Tickets are $40 and event sponsorships are available. Register online at www.dmvc.org/ocad or call 443-523-7639.
