CAMBRIDGE – A woman was wounded Sunday night and a suspect died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, ending a barricade situation.

On Sept. 10, at approximately 7:08 p.m., Cambridge Police Department (CPD) officers responded to the 6200 block of Periwinkle Court in reference to a domestic disturbance with a female shooting victim. Upon officers' arrival, they were able to locate the female victim on the third floor who was suffering from a gunshot wound to her hand and arm, a statement from CPD said on Monday morning.

Officers were able to safely evacuate the female victim from the apartment complex, where Dorchester County EMS was able to render aid and transport the female subject to the University of Maryland Shore Medical Center at Cambridge. Information was relayed to officers that the suspect, a 54-year-old man from Cambridge, had returned to the apartment and barricaded himself inside with a shotgun that was used in the shooting.

Officers from CPD and the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office (DSO) quickly set up a perimeter and advanced towards the apartment. The officers had the occupants of the other apartments evacuate the premises for their safety.

Additional officers from CPD, DSO and Maryland State Police (MSP) arrived on scene and continued to set up a perimeter. A CPD negotiator was called in to attempt to contact the male subject with negative results.

Members of the Cambridge Police Department's Special Response Team (SRT) and Detectives also responded to the scene. Maryland State Police and Natural Resources Police Department SWAT teams were also requested to respond.

After the arrival of MSP and NRP SWAT Teams, negotiations were still attempted with the suspect via telephone and utilizing a speaker system but had negative results. Teams utilized drones and robots and still had negative contact with the male subject inside the residence.

After all means were exhausted with attempting contact with the male subject, SWAT teams breached the apartment at approximately 11:20 p.m. After entering the apartment, the male subject was located with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was pronounced deceased.

CPD Detectives executed a search-and-seizure warrant on the residence where a 20-gauge shotgun and ammunition including spent shell casings were located.

The male subject was transported to the Office of the Medical Examiner in Baltimore. The female victim was flown to Shock Trauma in Baltimore for further medical treatment for non-life-threatening injuries.

“The Cambridge Police Department would like to thank the Dorchester County Sheriff's Office, Maryland State Police, Natural Resources Police and Dorchester County EMS for their quick response and assistance,” the statement said.
