CAMBRIDGE – A 39-year-old woman was arrested Feb. 6 by Cambridge police in connection with the Jan. 30 death of Sharod Ileak Mack. Mr. Mack was shot at his home at 803 Wood Duck Drive. He was deceased at the scene.

Officers from the Cambridge Police Department and officials from the Dorchester County State’s Attorney’s Office announced at a press conference Feb. 7 that Lasonya Corrine Sargent has been charged with first- and second-degree murder, first-degree assault, use of a dangerous weapon with intent to injure, use of a firearm in a violent crime, and false statement to an officer.

Mr. Mack and Ms. Sargent knew one another. Dorchester County State’s Attorney William Jones said, “At minimum, they were in a relationship and they lived together.”

Ms. Sargent is being held without bond. State’s Attorney Jones said if the case proceeds according to schedule, she could be tried in six or seven months.

The investigation has been a cooperative effort between the Cambridge Police Department and the Dorchester Office of the State’s Attorney.

At the press conference, the officials offered their heartfelt condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Mack. They also said they could not provide all factual details of the incident, because the investigation is continuing.

On Jan. 30, police received a 911 call — they declined to reveal who had made the call — and the responding officer found Ms. Sargent downstairs with a gunshot wound to the chest. Lifesaving techniques were begun immediately.

Further investigation revealed the body of Mr. Mack, lying in bed in an upstairs bedroom, shot twice in the head. Ms. Sargent was taken first to Dorchester General Hospital, then by helicopter to Shock Trauma in Baltimore.

Local law enforcement officers were assisted at the house by Maryland State Police crime scene investigators, who collected forensic evidence. While Ms. Sargent was being treated in Baltimore, police continued to pull together and study clues as to the identity of the shooter.

That evidence, together with information gathered from interviews with Ms. Sargent provided enough information for a warrant to be issued for her arrest when she was released by medical authorities.

Dorchester State’s Attorney Jones emphasized that Ms. Sargent’s rights must still be protected. She is presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Lt. Justin Todd of the CPD Special Investigation Unit said a great deal of work had been done by officers to build a case. Mr. Jones echoed those remarks, saying, “I can tell you, many hours have been spent.”

He noted that his associate, Molly Foxx, deserved recognition for her technical work on the case.

Det. Jason Dickerson was the arresting officer. Det./Sgt. Mark Lewis was also involved in the case and was present for the press conference.

While the job of processing evidence from the crime scene is completed, its study will continue. Mr. Jones said the investigation will go on until Ms. Sargent is tried, and he asked the public to contact his office or the CPD with any information regarding the case.

Mr. Jones declined to comment on the motive for the killing.

Mr. Jones said at the press conference that the public should be reassured that a suspect in the case is not still free.
