CAMBRIDGE – Vikings wrestlers wrapped up the annual Andy Perez Memorial Tournament on Saturday, earning a fourth-place finish against eight teams visiting from around the Chesapeake region. Cullen Cannon was C-SD’s best performer in the meet, with a first-place medal in the 145-pound class.

North Caroline won the tournament, with 554 points. James M. Bennett was second with 448, while Col. Richardson compiled 411. C-SD racked up 318 points worth of falls, reverses and pins.

The two-day event featured three mats covering C-SD’s gym floor, occupied non-stop by wrestlers competing in a round-robin format in which an athlete faces every opponent in his weight class.

C-SD’s wrestlers are led by Head Coach Jesse Morris, Assistant Coach Jay Turner and Assistant Coach Scott Betts.

It was up to the home team to roll mats after the conclusion of the tourney, so the Vikings got to work as the medals and trophies were prepared.

“For a young team, I’m very proud of them,” Coach Betts said as he gave his tired boys directions on where to pack the gear. “We have a lot of freshman and sophomores.”

And a pretty good upperclassman in Mr. Cannon. “Cullen went to 145 and looks great,” Coach Betts said.

His son Dawson, who placed second in the 132s, is a captain with Cullen. “Dawson is a junior, and shows a lot of control on the mat,” Coach Betts said. He noted that during the tournament, Dawson pinned Colby Bryan from St. Michaels, returning the favor from last season, when Dawson lost to Colby.

In terms of up-and-coming talent, fans should keep an eye on freshman Javant Rolle. “He has a heck of a future in this sport,” Coach Betts said. “He’s hungry and works hard.”

The coach was pleased with fourth place, considering not only the young team, but also the fact that the Vikings placed that highly after having to forfeit four weight classes. C-SD’s results by weight class were:
