Handsell House during the “Summer Saturdays Celebration” Aug.24 and Aug. 31 from 11 a.m. - 3 p.m.

The Chicone Village at Handsell was created to celebrate the history and culture of the First People of the Mid-Atlantic Woodland Period by demonstrating their life skills through living history interpretations.

The brick house at Handsell has it’s own mysterious and interesting history. Originally a five-bay, two story Georgian colonial plantation house built by wealthy Englishman turned American Patriot, Henry Steele, today it stands as a smaller version of it’s former self, a home rebuilt from ruins by a local 19th century farmer, John Shehee. This fascinating story begs so many questions.

The story of the Enslaved at Handsell is an important part of the development of the entire Indiantown Community, from enslaved to freeman to post Civil War and 20th century sharecroppers. Come hear of the research that the NHPA is conducting to learn more about those who built the American economy.
