DENTON — Deputy State Fire Marshals from the Upper Eastern Regional Office have arrested two local men for intentionally setting fire to a vehicle and attempting to defraud the insurance company.

On Aug. 7 Deputy State Fire Marshals served arrest warrants on the owner of the burned car, Samuel J. Moya, 25, of Denton and James Travers, 22, of Cambridge.

Both individuals were taken into custody without incident and transported to the Caroline County Court Commissioner where they were released on personal recognizance.

The vehicle fire occurred on July 1, 2018 at 8171 Clark Road in Denton. The vehicle that was burned is a 2008 BMW 335 Series coupe that belonged to Mr. Moya. The Denton Volunteer Fire Company responded to the blaze and was able to quickly bring it under control.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal was contacted by the insurance company on July 23 as they felt the fire was suspicious. An investigation by the Office of the State Fire Marshal determined the fire to be arson and Moya and Travers were developed as suspects and subsequently arrested for their involvement in the burning of the vehicle.

Both Moya and Travers were charged with arson 2nd degree, malicious burning 1st degree, malicious destruction of property and malicious burning to defraud. If convicted of all charges, both suspects face a maximum penalty of 33 years of imprisonment and/or $42,500 in fines.
