CAMBRIDGE — On May 21, famed artist Hyla Hurley will appear at the Heritage Museums and Gardens of Dorchester to discuss her needlepoint career. This presentation will begin at noon and will be casual in nature. An East New Market native, Ms. Hurley found her passion of needlework right in that small town.

Ms. Hurley was the proprietor of one of the nation’s finest needlepoint shops, The Point of it All, for 34 years. Her success is attributed to her creativity, use of color and her own designs coupled with her approach to the art form that makes it less daunting. She has been known to say “There are no needlepoint police” to encourage people to try it for themselves.

Ms. Hurley enjoys teaching this art to everyone with an interest. She has taught young stitchers, members of Congress and needlepoint historians. She has been commissioned to create pieces for the last seven Presidents’ wives with her “kissing balls” gracing the Grand Foyer of the White House for many years. Ms. Hurley still works in the needlepoint field, representing other designers and designing original pieces.

On the 21st, Ms. Hurley will display several pieces of her self-styled work and would welcome guests to bring their own pieces to show and discuss. Whether you have an antique piece or are trying out needlepointing for yourself, please join in and share your experiences.
