CAMBRIDGE — The Rev. Dr. John G. Moore Sr. is scheduled to perform his oration, “A Reflection on the Dreamer … Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.” at the Dorchester Center for the Arts on Feb. 1, 2019, at 5 p.m. The event is sponsored by The Dorchester Banner, Chesapeake Utilities, and the Dorchester Center for the Arts as an opening tribute to Black History Month in Dorchester County, and will be free and open to the public.
Dr. Moore’s presentation is a journey through the life of Dr. King, and will feature re-enactments of his iconic speeches, “We Shall Overcome,” “I Have A Dream,” “The Drum Major Instinct,” and his final speech that was delivered the night before his assassination, “The Mountain Top.” There will also be a Q&A session, and projection of relevant photos from throughout Dr. King’s lifetime.
The event is offered without charge, but seating is first-come, first-served, with a limit of 250 seats at the Dorchester Center for the Arts. Doors open and a reception will be held at 5 p.m., with the presentation to start at 5:45 p.m.
Rev. Moore is native of Philadelphia, Pa. In 2005 he retired from the United States Air Force after 20 years of honorable service to his nation. He currently serves as Director of Philanthropy and Engagement for the United Way of Delaware. From Jan. 1, 2000 to Dec. 31, 2017 he served as the Youth Pastor for Calvary Baptist Church in Dover, Del. Dr. Moore is also President and CEO of Total Increase Ministries.
In August 2007 he was recognized by Delaware Governor Ruth Anne Minner and eight state agencies as the recipient of the John H. Mathis Trailblazer Award. On Aug. 26, 2011 he was selected to recite “I Have a Dream” at a private dedication in Washington D.C. for the opening of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial that was attended by over 7,500 guests. Rev. Moore was awarded the 2012 Delaware State Education Association’s Human and Civil Rights Award for his life work in advancing the cause of human and civil rights in Delaware.
In 2014 he was selected as a Distinguished Gentlemen of Delaware award recipient by Scholarship of 10, Inc. Then, in 2015 he was awarded the Jefferson Foundation Award by Governor Jack Markell. In 2016, Dr. Moore was named as the keynote speaker for the New York State Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration by Governor Andrew M. Cuomo in Albany, NY. Also in 2016 Dr. Moore received the Liberty Bell Award from the Delaware State Bar Association. In 2017 Dr. Moore was selected as the recipient of prestigious Stanford L. Bratton Award by the First State Community Action Agency.
Last year, (in 2018) Dr. Moore was awarded the Unsung Hero Award for Kent County Delaware for his selfless work in Education and Youth Development by the Metropolitan Wilmington Urban League Young Professionals. Also in 2018 Dr. Moore was the keynote speaker at over 60 commemoration services celebrating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and the celebration of African-American History as well as over 15 leadership development forums.
Rev. Dr. Moore is an internationally-renowned preacher and orator who has spoken in hundreds of schools, colleges, churches, correctional facilities and organizational gatherings locally, throughout the nation and in Hawaii, Germany, Japan, and Korea.
Dr. Moore resides in Magnolia, Del., with his wife of 33 years, Candace Alphonso-Moore. They have two sons, John Jr., and Collin Joshua.
