Kent Island men nip C-SD Vikes T&F, 110-106

CAMBRIDGE – The Vikings’ track and field teams took on four 2A schools on April 25, and nearly pulled off a win over Kent Island, before falling to the Buccaneers 110-106. The Lady Vikings made a strong showing in an evenly matched contest, placing third with 79 points.

North Caroline won the women’s meet, with 95 points, following by Queen Anne’s County with 86, C-SD, Kent Island 64 and Easton 50. In third for the men was North Caroline with 93, then Easton 30 and Queen Anne’s 26.

In this meet, events were scored to five places, with points awarded 8, 6, 4, 2 and 1.

Among the day’s top performances for the Lady Vikes was a win in the 4x100-meter relay. Sophomore Destiny Frantum got the squad started, with freshmen Ronke Oyerinde and Brianna Wongus taking the second and third legs. Junior Janee Quailes carried the baton home for the victory, in a time of 52.70 seconds, the blink of an eye before second-place Easton, whose girls finished in 53 seconds flat.

All of a sudden, it seems, the Lady Vikings have a dominating crew of jumpers. QuaNiya “QQ” Quinones had the best distance at the meet, with 14’ 5.5”. Ronke Oyerinde took a break from her exertions on the track to earn third in the event with 12’ 9.5”, as junior teammate KirMya Wilson grabbed fourth with an effort of 12’ 8.75” - the girls’ combined score was 14 for C-SD.

As for the boys, look at it this way – in last fall’s football season, the Vikings’ track and field coaches kept seeing running back Tajh Molock breaking into the open field and galloping for yet another touchdown. Hopes were high that the speedy junior would come out for the track and field team.

Tuesday’s meet offered a good example why, with Molock racing to a first-place finish in the sport’s glamour event, the 100-meter dash. He finished in 11.05 seconds, setting a new personal record as he broke his old best mark of 11.34.

Are you tired, Tajh? Not yet? Good.

Down went another PR, as Molock won the 200-meter dash in 22.50 seconds, beating his old mark of 23.34 – that’s almost a second better, a considerable improvement in a short race.

Then there was senior Jacob Newcomer – and yes, he really is new to the school this year – whose hard work paid off in the 110-meter hurdles, with a first-place finish and a PR in 15.70 seconds.

But you know what? It’s about to get serious around here.

Today, the Vikings travel to the Kent Island Invitational, starting at 3 p.m. And that’s it for the regular season.

On May 10, it’s the Bayside Conference Championships at Viking Stadium, starting at 3 p.m. At the Baysides will be all of Maryland’s Eastern Shore public high schools, regardless of size.

Then on May 18 and 20, the Vikings will host the 1A East Regional Championships, where the Eastern Shore’s smaller schools will vie for glory and the Lady Vikings will defend their regional title. The top four finishers in each event at regionals qualify for the State Championships on May 25 and 27 at Morgan State University.
