SECRETARY — Ironman Maryland, a triathlon that brings many athletes from around the world to Dorchester County was held on Oct. 7. Fifth grade teacher, Ms. Crystal, and guidance counselor, Amanda Hubbert were determined to make it a learning experience for the WES students, especially the fifth graders.

Over the past several weeks there have been assemblies, letter writing campaigns, lessons in economics, athleticism, sportsmanship, nutrition, even the scientific concepts of buoyancy, wind resistance and aerodynamics!

On Oct. 5, Jude Travers of Mrs. Cox’s third grade class, received a very special visit. IMMD Triathlete Dr. Michael Lynch was so moved by the third grader’s letter that he drove to the school to thank him personally. He shared his personal story, how he runs for injured vets through Fisher House, and even signed his race hat that he typically wears and gave it to Jude!

He was bib number 1245 on Saturday, and the WES students were cheering on him and the other runners! Several other participants thanked WES students through IMMD volunteers, teaching our students the power of a kind act!
