HURLOCK — During a visit to Hurlock on Jan. 23 Maryland Comptroller Peter Franchot stopped by the Hurlock Volunteer Fire Company (HVFC) to honor its volunteers and admire the newly-purchased tower truck. Visitors who see the truck, a Rosenbauer Cobra with a 101’ aerial platform, marvel at its size and scope and Mr. Franchot was no exception.

The comptroller offered “medallions” of appreciation to HVFC President Jason Trego and his father Frank for their years of volunteer service. The medallions are a continuing accolade stemming from the days of Maryland’s 31st Comptroller, Louis L. Goldstein, who handed them out during his term of office. Mr. Franchot is well-known for using the gold medallions to honor Marylanders who “make a difference in their communities” as well as the Maryland Hero Medallion which recognizes “veterans and first responders for their service and valor.”

Comptroller Franchot presented a Certificate of Recognition to the fire company “In celebration of your first-rate emergency service to the citizens of the Town of Hurlock, by utilizing trained volunteers to ensure a safe environment and a rapid response to local emergencies, in special appreciation for your contributions to the community and best wishes for continued growth and success.”

Mr. Franchot said, “I appreciate what you do and the town does, too.” Hurlock Mayor Joyce Spratt added, “They do a great job.” Mr. Trego said, “It’s a company effort. We couldn’t have done this without everybody and especially without the town support. It takes the town’s support for us to be able to do what we do.”

After the presentation and before he left for his next stop, the comptroller said, “I’m very grateful for what you all represent. I have to salute Gov. Hogan for bringing fiscal discipline to the state and freeing up money” to use for other projects. A volunteer said loudly, “Keep us in mind if you have extra money” to which Mr. Franchot replied, “If you need me, have the mayor call me.” And, this friend of the Eastern Shore, meant it!
