CAMBRIDGE — For the 13th year, Grace United Methodist Church is hosting its Community Thanksgiving Day Dinner this Thursday, free of charge.

Starting at noon, anyone and everyone is invited to come to the church at 501 Race St., Cambridge, to sit down and eat a traditional meal or carry out a tray full of turkey, all the trimmings and some sweet treats.

Chris Kidd, who works in community outreach for the church, estimated that 1,200 meals were served in 2015. This year, with help and donations from a number of churches, volunteers, local businesses and community organizations, Grace United plans to serve even more. Church members and volunteers will serve anyone who comes through the door until the food runs out.

Lead organizers from the church who began planning several months ago estimate that close to 200 volunteers will help in many different ways. Work began Monday to get ready for the community dinner. Thirty turkeys are being prepared at Elks Lodge Lodge 1272 just outside Cambridge and at the East New Market Volunteer Fire Department. A number of hams are also cooking. The rest of the food, all the trimmings and sides, are being prepared at Grace Church. Community members donate plenty of desserts as well.

Besides carry out and sit-down service, a number of volunteers will help deliver roughly 700 meals to other community centers and to folks working on Thanksgiving Day including police officers.

Skip Redmer, who is in charge of volunteers, Juanita Darby, who will work mainly in the church kitchen, Martha Cannon, church secretary and Mrs. Kidd all invited everyone to come to the church to enjoy a hot Thanksgiving dinner and fellowship regardless of need.

“It’s a good home-cooked meal for anybody that’s hungry,” Mr. Redmer said.
