Dorchester County School Board races set for November
By CAMBRIDGE - The pool of Dorchester County School Board candidates vying to represent Districts One and Five in November was narrowed to two after all May 14 primary election votes were counted.
By Friday afternoon, May 24, all remaining mail-in ballots had been counted and uploaded to the State of Maryland Board of Elections website. Certification was expected by close of business Friday, according to the Dorchester County Board of Elections office.
Final results in District One are: Brandy Dawson Cumberland, 38.29%, current Board President Mike D. Diaz Sr., 37.36%, and Lucas A. Thorpe, 24.25%.
In District Five, final results are: current School Board member Christopher M. Wheedleton, 57.73%, Jerome J. Harris, 22.71%, and Michael Hartford, 19.56%.
For the District One seat, Diaz and Cumberland will meet in November's general election.
In District Five, the November seat race will be between Wheedleton and Harris.
In District Three, current Board Vice President and Past President Susan V. Morgan will run in November against her only primary challenger, Christine LaMonica.
In the contested primary race to fill the open seat of Maryland’s retiring Senator Ben Cardin, the state’s Democrats selected Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks while Republicans chose former Gov. Larry Hogan.
But in Dorchester County, Democrat David Trone and Republican Robin Ficker were the victors.
Trone received 1,255 votes to 740 for Alsobrooks. Ficker’s total 1,377 topped Hogan’s 1,246.
Incumbent District One Congressman, Republican Andy Harris, defeated Chris Bruneau, Sr., 2,327 to 423 votes, with Michael Scott Lemon receiving 91.
District One’s Democratic results were closer, with winner Blane H. Miller III receiving 1,042 votes to 845 for Blessing T. Oluwadare.
In the presidential contest, local Democrats cast 1941 votes for President Joe Biden, 187 for Uncommitted, with 42 for Dean Phillips, and 62 for Marianne Williamson, both of whom had dropped out of the race.
Republicans gave former President Donald Trump 2,529 votes and 349 for former candidate and former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley.
According to Dorchester County Board of Elections Director Gwendolyn Dales, local primary voter turnout was among the lowest she could remember, with only a fraction of the county's 24,000 registered voters casting ballots.
