CAMBRIDGE — University of Maryland Shore Regional Health will offer a three-session class, Diabetes and You, on Tuesdays, Jan. 15, 22 and 29, at UM Shore Medical Center at Dorchester.

Taught by diabetes nurse educator Wynne Aroom, the class is free and open to the public.

It provides medical information and strategies enabling patients to manage their diabetes for optimal wellness. The class meets in the Board Room on the main floor of the hospital, 6 to 8 p.m.

“Diabetes is very prevalent in our Shore communities, but many patients don’t realize there is much they can do to manage the disease in a way that avoids complications and helps them avoid serious complications that can interfere with their independence and overall wellbeing,” says Ms. Aroom. “This class provides important information that patients need to understand how diabetes can affect their health and simple strategies to monitor and manage their symptoms.”

Ms. Aroom also leads a free, monthly diabetes support group that meets on the fourth Wednesday of the month at 5:30 p.m., in the hospital board room. Both the support group and the class are open to partners and caregivers as well as patients. To register or for more information, call Ms. Aroom, 410-822-1000, ext. 5286 or email her, waroom@umm.edu
