Jacob McCroy of Cambridge-South Dorchester High School wore his “Steam Punk Hat,” which won the Judges’ Choice award during the Dorchester Center for the Arts’ student art show on Saturday.[/caption] CAMBRIDGE — Artistic talent was on display Saturday at the Dorchester Center for the Arts’ (DCA) student show. Young people from Dorchester and Talbot counties exhibited their work and performed music to complement the creations. Teachers from the two counties had submitted their students’ best paintings, drawings and sculptures, which were then judged by DCA experts. The halls and meeting room of the center were vibrant with color and energy as families and friends admired the students’ work. “We’ve been doing this student show for many years,” DCS Executive Director Mickey Love said. “Your work was awesome.” Winning entries were: North Dorchester High School - In Your Face Award: “Baby” by Nick Schmick; Best Use of Light and Dark: “Demons” by Sierrah Lanahan Cambridge-South Dorchester - Ethereal Award: “Bright Lights” by Meriam Amenzouy; Blended Watercolor Award: (untitled) by Shelby Glessner North Dorchester MS - Wire Wonder Award: “Self Portrait in Wire” by Joseph Wathen; Best Mechanical Art: “American Rebel” by Meredith Coulbourne Mace’s Lane MS - Best Fantasy Award: “The Cabin” by Kameran Phillips South Dorchester K-8 - The Art and Sports Award: “Soccer Popart” by Abby Robinson; Red Sky Award: “My Family” by Isabelle Hughes Maple Elementary - The Critics’ Award for Color: “Did You Get Around to it?” by Gizelle San; The Forward-Looking Award: “With Art I Can...!” by Adam Pennoyer Warwick Elementary - Best Celestial Rendition: “Sun and Moon” by Chloe Hoxter Hurlock Elementary - Best Cultural Depiction: “African Culture” by Sherlya Tovar Sandy Hill - Urban Landscape Award: “City Skyline” by Maggie Ryan; Best Color Blending: “Warm/Cool” by Javion Dawson Christian School (Easton) - Decorative Realism Award “Tin Leaves” by Leah Skirka; Musical Depiction Award: “My Guitar” by Kayla West Best in Show honors went to: Best Flat Art - “Bad Wolf” by Brittany Wright, Cambridge-South Dorchester Best 3D - “Name the Elements” by Shayla Collins, Mace’s Lane Judges’ Choice - “Steam Punk Hat” by Jacob McCroy, Cambridge-South Dorchester Performer and piano instructor Anne Watts was there with several of her students, who played selections for the audience. “There is something about children making art - it’s so real and unfiltered. The goal is to keep it that way.” The musicians were Alexia and Amanda Bair, Kellen Lambert, Laura and Kate Dixon, Jasper Hood, Ole Singelstad and Hunter Newton.
