CAMBRIDGE – The Cambridge Cold Weather Shelter has moved from its original site at the Wesleyan Church. The move has prompted questions from the community regarding the shelter’s operation, something its leaders want to address.

“We’re open, we’re at The Salvation Army property,” in Cambridge, shelter board Vice President Robert White said.

The shelter’s staff knew at the beginning of this cold season that the church would need its hall for its own programs, so they set up their new site in coordination with The Salvation Army.

A trailer has been placed behind the church — The Salvation Army is first of all a house of worship – and those in need of warmth and hospitality are finding help there. Mr. White said the board had originally wanted to place three trailers on the property, but learned that the power company would need seven or eight weeks to set up electric service for that many units, so the board placed just one.

But that’s for this season. There’s more to be done for the next.

Board members have begun to think about their next steps, to offer more comprehensive services to the needy.

“Getting people off the streets is the easiest part of the process,” Mr. White said. The shelter’s leaders have started to consider how to provide job training, case work and more to the homeless, to help them stay off the streets permanently.

In the meantime, work continues at The Salvation Army. “We still need community support,” Mr. White said, noting that not only are financial donations welcome, but also goods such as personal hygiene items, socks and underwear.
