It was a special afternoon outside of Vienna for the open house event at Chicone Village Day. Daniel “Firehawk” Abbott held forth inside the Chicone longhouse on the Handsell property, talking of times few of us can even imagine. Representatives of the Pokomoke Indian Nation held artifact displays and demonstrated point making and craft techniques. There were Indian jewelry and craft displays, too, as well as self-guided tours of the Handsell plantation house. A great Native American-style lunch was available for purchase, which included smoked duck and turkey, hominy, corn and carrot breads, mushroom soup and more. The Handsell property is always open for viewing, with explanatory placards posted alongside the road, and it’s a fascinating visit for anyone interested in Native American history.
