CAMBRIDGE — Nice kick, Trevor North. Really, really nice kick.

There have been a couple routs so far this season, as the Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Vikings have racked up four wins and no losses. But Friday was not one of those games.

Wicomico High School came into town with a 2-1 record, including a blowout or two of their own. It promised to be an exciting contest, and fans were not disappointed with the action on the field.

An early Vikings lead disappeared as WiHi fought back to a 22-21 lead in the third quarter. The winning margin wasn’t reached until C-SD kicker Trevor North headed out with 8:03 left in the game to try a 35-yard attempt.

A kick of that distance can be pretty challenging for a high school player, but young Mr. North was up to it. The ball sailed through the uprights with room to spare, and the Vikes were ahead 24-22, the final score.

WiHi received the opening kickoff and sputtered on the first possession of the game. On first and 9 from deep in their own territory, the Indians fumbled and C-SD recovered at the 20.

Four plays later, on first and goal from the 3, Emory Wongus fumbled into the end zone. Teammate Dishawn Elliott was on the job, though, and recovered for the touchdown and a score of 7-0.

Late in the second quarter, the Vikings were moving the ball well, when on second and 21, Terry Wilson was hit hard at the WiHi 15 trying to pull in a throw. The resulting pass interference call made it second and 7 from the 13.

Two short gains were followed by the four-minute warning. Then on fourth and one from the 5-yard line, Craig Jenkins carried it for that one tough yard, giving the Vikes a first down.

QB Lowe’s carry to the 1 was followed by a James Smith touchdown and a Trevor North extra point, bringing the score to 14-0 with 3:18 left in the half.

The next score put WiHi on the board. A 2-point conversion made it 14-8 at the half.

The Vikings wasted no time as they took the second-half kickoff to the WiHi 48. A loss of 7 on first down was followed by a run to the 23. On the next play, it was James Smith again, pulling in Lowe’s throw for a 21-8 score at the 10:31 mark.

It was starting to look like WiHi might take a beating, but the Indians had other ideas.

On their next possession, Jordan Brittingham ran it in for a score, but the TD was called back, when the referees determined that someone in the goal-line scrum had aided the runner. That made it third and goal at the 6, and a throw to Matt Robinson brought the score to 21-15 with 4:40 left in the third quarter.

C-SD got the ball, but WiHi’s defense started spending time in their backfield. Third and 23 led to a punt.

Three plays later, WiHi’s Nelson Brown broke free and took it about 60 yards down the sideline for the Indians’ first lead of the game, 22-21 with 1:11 left in the third quarter.

There were shouts of frustration and encouragement along the Vikings’ sideline, but with their coaches’ leadership and a noisy crowd urging them on, C-SD players kept their cool and got down to business.

The ensuing drive went into the fourth quarter, as the Vikings brought the ball downfield. It stalled, though, and Trevor North got the call on fourth and 11 with 8:03 left. His kick gave the Vikings the lead at 24-22, and that was all they would need for the win.

C-SD defensive back Dominic Chester shut down WiHi’s last chance with an interception and return to the WiHi 29, with 1:20 left in the game.
