CAMBRIDGE — The Vikings’ junior varsity basketball team continued its winning ways in the New Year on Monday, beating visitors SS. Peter & Paul High School, 55-28.

“They ran the offense well,” Coach Tommy Frazier said. “They passed down low well to each other.”

They sure did. Crisp bounce passes were an effective part of the Vikes’ offense, as the home team took an early lead and never looked back.

Coach Frazier’s specialty is offense, and he has his young men working on sets to prepare them for varsity play.

“One, three, one, Virgil, on the baseline,” he called from the bench as the Vikings pressed their attack. Seconds later, Virgil Simms gathered in a pass and sank a basket, stretching the C-SD lead to 8-2 in the first quarter.

Strong rebounding, especially from big man Clive Rhoden taking charge under the hoop, helped to stall the visitors’ own offense, as the first half ended with a 17-11 Vikings’ lead.

The third quarter opened with a bang. Zechai Cornish drained a 3-pointer from the corner and C-SD was off to a scoring run that led to a 42-20 lead at the end of the period. It was an advantage the Sabres were unable to overcome.

* In other JV news, the Vikings offense was in high gear Dec. 19, 2014, in Salisbury facing Parkside High School.

“We scored 71 points and never shot a foul shot,” Coach Frazier said. “We had one 3-pointer.”

Virgil Simms was the top scorer, with 22 points. The final tally was 71-55.
