CAMBRIDGE — Cambridge-South Dorchester High School’s football team follows a tradition of excellence. But today’s players will graduate soon - and the next generation is on the way up.

The school’s junior varsity (JV) team earned a 6-0 record this season, as the freshmen and sophomore athletes learned the fine points of the game and coaches’ expectations of their behavior.

“The main goal at the JV level is to try to develop to varsity,” Coach Frank Whirley said Monday, as his boys warmed up prior to a scrimmage with Colonel Richardson and Washington High School.

The team tries to win, but there’s more to it than that, as coaches stress a family approach to the game.

“We want them to play as a unit, not for themselves,” Coach Whirley said. “We want them to act like brothers.”

Coaches Whirley, Andrew Bishop, Joe Morris, Chris Famularo, Troy Townsend, Sonny Maddox and Jason Shorter Sr. are looking for good conduct on and off the field, including success in class. “We do study hall every day,” Coach Whirley said.

Young men on the roster are Nieel Thompson, Tyler Harding, Cullen Cannon, Kamel Hopkins, Danny VanRiel, Rodney Dotson, DaJour Jones, Zachary Stanford, Tajh Molock, Jimmy Shulze, Zackiah Walker, Tamar Collins, DeAdrian Jones, Christian Gray, Clint Meekins, Randolph Taylor, Justin Tyler, Darius Woolford, Tekhi Seymore, Christian James, Koby Ruark, Jayon Wongus, Michael Rodriguez, TaVonte Anderson, Jose Torres, Taylor Pohl, Curtis Stanton, Ivory Buck, Kyriel Cruz, Demetri Shields, Anthony Strawberry, Hunter Brown, Isaiah Foster, Eric Shorter, Caleb Ruark, Shain Greene, Jerome Tilgman, Zachary Lewis, Hunter Kane, Daniel Erdall, Josh Townsend, Dylan Degges, Jamal Banks and Matt King.
