CAMBRIDGE - “Congratulations, champions! We are very proud to be your coaches,” a message to Vikings athletes said after they won the boys’ and girls’ Region 1A East Track and Field Championships on Saturday. It was the first time since 2012 that both squads have come out on top in the same year.

The wins came after a months-long campaign to take the titles, including the establishment of a winter, indoor track and field program at C-SD, to help the Vikings better compete against their rivals. The athletes also couldn’t forget how close the final placings were last season, when the girls beat Snow Hill by five points for the title, with the boys falling to Colonel Richardson by only four.

This season, C-SD’s depth spelled the difference, as Vikings fought hard for every point – in the Regionals, events were scored to eighth place, with points awarded being 10, 8, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. A balanced team with talent throughout can rack up a good score with those middle and lower places, as their top athletes go after first.

The Lady Vikings got out ahead on Thursday, the first day of Regionals, and extended their lead on Saturday, as they finished with 213 points. Second place Snow Hill compiled 152.

With the top four finishers in each event qualifying for the Maryland Public Secondary Schools Athletic Association Championships at Morgan State University this week, it looks like the Vikings will be taking a busload of runners, jumpers and throwers to the big show.
