Game halted after fights broke out

EASTON – The Cambridge-South Dorchester High School Vikings (1A) varsity football team wrapped up a successful regular season at Easton (3A/2A) on Friday, with a 13-0 victory over the Warriors (1-8).

C-SD’s balanced offense of runs and passes, with an aggressive defense and effective special teams set the squad up well for the post-season. At press time, the Bayside Athletic Conference’s playoff schedule had not been posted.

Easton’s opening drive was halted when a fumble was recovered by C-SD. On the Vikings’ first offensive play, quarterback Blake LaBelle kept the ball and ran more than 50 yards for a touchdown. The extra point kick was no good, making it 6-0.

The second quarter began in a similar fashion, with Easton moving downfield with methodical gains on runs, only to lose the ball on a turnover, this one an interception in the end zone by William Jackson, returned to about the 20-yard line.

The Vikings’ ensuing drive ended with 5:58 left in the second period, when Kayion Marine ran in from the 6-yard line for a TD. An extra point by Wil Reinbold followed, and the score was 13-0.

That’s where the tally remained, though not because of anything that happened on the field. Information released Tuesday by the Talbot County Sheriff's  Office said that multiple fights broke out during the game, resulting in the arrests of four juvenile males and one juvenile female.

Easton police were joined by Maryland State Police and Dorchester County sheriff's deputies in dispersing the crowd and maintaining order. Police and the boards of education from Talbot and Dorchester counties are reviewing video of the incidents. More arrests are expected, the report said.

The Vikings came into the contest on a four-game winning streak, while the Warriors had won only their first game, and lost the next seven.

C-SD is ranked second in the Bayside 1A, behind Colonel Richardson. Though the Vikings have a better overall record, the Caroline men have a better record in the division, by virtue of a 14-13 win over the Vikings earlier this season. The rankings are rounded out by Kent County, Snow Hill, and Washington.
