BKN-SPURS-WEMBANYAMA-SPEARS

LAS VEGAS — No charges will be filed following a brief investigation of the altercation involving pop star Britney Spears, San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama and a member of the player's security team, Las Vegas police said Friday. Spears said she was struck by a security guard as she tried to approach Wembanyama near a restaurant in a Las Vegas casino complex on Wednesday night. Wembanyama said a person — he later was told it was Spears — grabbed him from behind. But the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department said Friday that Spears inadvertently “hit herself in the face” when someone pushed her hand off Wembanyama. By Basketball Writer Tim Reynolds. TEN--TENNIS-SAUDI ARABIA

WIMBLEDON, England — Tennis appears set to follow the path of golf and other sports by doing business with Saudi Arabia and its $650 billion sovereign wealth fund. There are some in tennis, such as Billie Jean King, who hope that sort of collaboration might have a transformative effect in a kingdom where rights groups say women continue to face discrimination in most aspects of family life and homosexuality is a major taboo. BBO--HBCU ALL-STAR GAME

SEATTLE — Major League Baseball is opening its All-Star weekend in Seattle with a showcase game for top players from Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Northwestern has suspended coach Pat Fitzgerald for two weeks without pay following an investigation into alleged hazing within the football program. But the report says there were “significant opportunities” to find out about it and report the conduct. Fitzgerald started serving his suspension on Friday. He says in a statement he was “very disappointed” when he heard about the hazing allegations. By Andrew Seligman. SENT: 400 words, photo.

SOC--UEFA-MULTI-CLUB OWNERSHIP

GENEVA — Brighton, Toulouse and Aston Villa have been cleared by UEFA to play in European competitions next season despite their owners having ties to other clubs that qualified. But they had a one-year transfer prohibition imposed on any deals between the partner clubs. All three were under threat of being removed by UEFA. UEFA drafted rules on multi-club ownership 25 years ago to protect the integrity of its competitions when the teams could be drawn to play each other during the season. UEFA-appointed investigators evaluated cases of Brighton and Union Saint-Gilloise, Toulouse and AC Milan, plus Aston Villa and Vittoria Guimaraes. By Graham Dunbar. SENT: 700 words, photos.
