Wrestling season for the Vikings began on Dec. 29, with the Andy Perez Memorial Tournament at Cambridge-South Dorchester High School.
Andy Perez was a student at C-SD who lost his life in a motorcycle wreck on July 27, 2007. He participated in wrestling, football and baseball.
The meet uses a round-robin format, in which a wrestler competes against every opponent in his weight class. Three mats are occupied constantly throughout the two-day event, which concluded on Dec. 30.
Teams from across the region compete in the annual tournament. Present this year were North Caroline, Col. Richardson, James M. Bennett, Annapolis, Mardela, C-SD, Kent County, St. Michaels and Elkton.
Leading the C-SD men this season are Head Coach Jesse Morris, with assistant coaches Jay Turner and Scott Betts.
North Caroline won the tournament, with Cambridge-South Dorchester in fourth place, despite having to forfeit four weight classes. Viking boys earned several medals, including a first place in the 145-pound class for Cullen Cannon.
