CAMBRIDGE — On April 22, the Spocott Windmill Foundation, in combination with the Dorchester Citizens for Planned Growth (DCPG), will sponsor a day of environmental and historical celebration at the Spocott Windmill near Cambridge, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Activities will include the running of the windmill (weather permitting) and tours of all the buildings in the windmill complex including the Windmill, Adaline Wheatley House, Castle Haven Schoolhouse, Blacksmith Shop, Country Store and Museum, and the partially renovated 19th Century Doctor’s Office. The Foundation will also be unveiling the first round of displays for these buildings.

Other ongoing activities during the day will include numerous activities for children in the old schoolhouse, food, and live music.

The highlight of the day will be the unveiling of the Adaline Wheatley House, the home of the nationally recognized cook and long-time Spocott Farm employee. Adaline, a free black, worked at Spocott her entire life, raising a family of seven, as she served as cook, nurse, and house manager at Spocott. In the 1920s, she was featured on the cover of a brochure/cookbook put out by the Delmarva Cooking Association. On Earth Day, “Adaline” will be present to share her many stories and opinions.

The day will also feature the Arbor Day tree giveaway sponsored by the Dorchester County Forestry Board. The Spocott Windmill Foundation and DCPG will sponsor a horseshoe tournament for teams representing community service organizations.
