DOVER - Wilma M. Fifer, nee Hartmann, died on Tuesday, February 9, 2021 at Silver Lake Center, Dover, Del.
Mrs. Fifer was born in Williamsville, N.Y., near Buffalo, on November 15, 1921 to John and Wilhelmina Hartmann. She attended school there until January 1934, when the Hartmann's moved to Petersburg, Del., where she attended Caesar Rodney High School, graduating in 1939. Wilma then went into nurse's training at St. Agnes Hospital in Philadelphia, Pa., where she graduated in 1943. She spent several years employed at Kent General Hospital in Dover, including as part of the original group of Registered Nurses to staff the first ICU. After moving in 1970 to Ft. Pierce, Fla., she worked at Ft. Pierce Memorial Hospital and later the New Lawnwood Medical Center in Ft. Pierce as an ICU nurse and night supervisor. In 1976, Wilma was chosen Employee of the Year by her faithful co-workers. During her working years, she was very active in community and hospital efforts.
After retiring, she moved to Vero Beach, Fla., where she enjoyed her many friends, golfing and bowling. After 23 years in Florida, Wilma moved back to Delaware to be near family, still enjoying bowling and friends. She also loved to travel.
Mrs. Fifer is survived by her son, John (Jack) Fifer and his wife, Connie; a granddaughter, Amy Penney of Dover; and great granddaughter, Miranda Penney.
Besides her parents; Mrs. Fifer was predeceased by her son, Joseph Allen Fifer in 1946; and her great granddaughter, Tegan Penney.
Services will be Tuesday, February 16, 2021 and will consist of a mass at 10 a.m. at Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover, Del., followed by burial at Sharon Hills Memorial Park, 2928 Sharon Hills Rd., Dover, Del.
