William Vernon Lemex passed away in Houston, Texas, on June 20, 2023. Vernon was born on February 10, 1933, in Milton, Delaware, to Lillie Marian Lemex (nee Holloway) and William Guy Lemex.
Vernon was an extraordinary man. He earned degrees from the University of Delaware and Harvard University. He attained the rank of 1st Lieutenant in the US Army while serving his country in West Germany in the 1950s. All who knew him benefitted from his intelligence and wit. He liked nothing better than to impart his knowledge in a kind and helpful manner. We all enjoyed the way he saw humor in everyday situations.
He was married to Marilyn Myers for 33 years, whom he met in Germany, and they had 3 children. He enjoyed sailing all his life. He participated in sailboat racing across the Gulf of Mexico to Vera Cruz, Mexico. He loved teaching sailing, until his last days, earning a national award given to only the top 1% of sailing instructors. He was president of the Houston Diving Assoc., taking many divers on trips to see the beautiful coral reefs of the Caribbean. His work careers included computer programmer, sales manager, and mortgage banker. His passions included voracious reading, collecting wine, and golfing. He enjoyed music, singing and playing the guitar. He lived a simple and healthy life, always keeping an attitude of youth and joie de vivre!
He is survived by his children, Sherri Lemex Barksdale of Austin, TX, Steven Ross Lemex of Houston, TX, Kristine Nicole Armstrong of Rosenberg, TX; his former partner, Susan Hoffman of Evans, CO; and his stepdaughter, Katherine Hoffman of Evans, CO. Vernon has ten grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. He also leaves behind four nieces and nephews and their children and grandchildren in Delaware.
In memory of Vernon, please make a donation to your local library or Blood Bank.
A funeral service for William will be held Friday, July 7, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
