William M. Knight Sr.

81 CHESTERTOWN, Md. - William M. "Bill" Knight, Sr. of Chestertown, died on Friday, Nov., 5, 2010, at Queen Anne's County Hospice House. He was 81. He was born and raised in Byberry Township near Philadelphia, Pa. and graduated from Northeast High School class of 1946. He met Chloe Ream in 1954 and married a year later. He served in the U.S. Army where he was honorably discharged. They purchased a farm in 1955 and moved to Sudlersville. They subsequently purchased numerous farms in upper Queen Anne's County. Mr. Knight started as a vegetable and grain farmer and evolved into one of the largest grain farmers in Queen Anne's County. He loved hunting, crabbing, and his family. Mr. Knight was a devoted Yankee fan. He served as a member of the QACO Farm Bureau, a Charter member of the Chestertown Elks Lodge #2474, a member of the Board of Directors of Mercantile Bank, a member of the Queenstown Moose Lodge, a member of the Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post in Chestertown, and a member of the N.R.A. In addition to his wife, Chloe; he is survived by a son, William M. Knight, Jr. of Church Hill; two daughters, Mary Ann Spencer and her husband Scott of Roanoke, Va., and Melissa K. "Mitzi" Thompson of Church Hill; along with his beloved grandchildren, Rachel, Alyssa, Brittany, Tyler, and Kayla. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Fellows, Helfenbein, and Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road Chestertown, where relatives and friends may call on Friday evening, Nov. 12, 2010, from 6 to 8:00 p.m. Interment will be in Sudlersville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Hospice of Queen Anne's, 255 Comet Drive Centreville, MD 21617.
