QUINBY, Va. - James "Jim" Porter Jr., of Quinby Va., husband of the late Nancy Lou Porter and formerly from Millington, Md. Died Saturday, Aug. 1, 2009, in his home. He was 74. Mr. Porter was born in Millington, Md., the son of the late William James Roland and Edith Wyatt Porter. Jim managed the Sassafras Boat Co. in Georgetown, Md., from the early 1970's until 1981, he then became the manager of the Central Grain Center in Millington, Md., until his retirement in 1994. Jim served his country in the United States Coast Guard and continued his service in the Coast Guard Reserves for many years. He was a former member of the Millington Volunteer Fire Co. A member of the Asbury United Methodist Church, Millington, Md., a member of the National Rifle Assoc. and a volunteer at Shore Memorial Hospital in Nassawadox, Va. Jim enjoyed hunting and fishing for many years. He was an avid traveler, enjoying domestic and international travel and loved cruises. Mr. Porter is survived by two sons, William James Roland Porter III (Jamie) and his wife Barbara of Chestertown, Md., and John Robert Porter of Arlington, Va.; three grandchildren, Gillian Spero, Emily Schatzman and Hilary Schatzman; a great-granddaughter, Julia; one niece; and his longtime companion and caregiver, Joan Baumbach. A memorial service will be 3 p.m., Tuesday Aug. 11,in the Fellows Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 370 W. Cypress St., Millington, Md., where friends and family may call after 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in his memory to the Hospice of the Eastern Shore, 165 Market St. Onancock, VA 23417.
