LAUREL - William Gordy Hyland (Chief), died Monday, Dec. 22, 2008, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. He had been a resident of Genesis Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Seaford for the past three years. Born in Laurel, he was the son of the late Charles and Eva (Hovington) Hyland. He served in the United States Army, receiving an honorable discharge. He was employed for several years as a truck driver for various area companies. He was also employed with Johnny Janosik, Reese Carey Gas Station, both of Laurel and retired from Peninsula Oil, Co. of Seaford. He was a member of New Zion United Methodist Church in Laurel, where he served as a trustee, member of Senior and Men's choirs and former Cemetery Sextant. He was also a member of Morning Star Lodge 10, F&AM P.H.A. of Laurel, former member of Suakim Temple 60 of Wilmington, and the American Legion, Roger W. Gumby Post 16 of Laurel. His survivors include his wife of 63 years, Dolores E. Hyland of Laurel; three children, Gail (Ralph) Purnell of Lincoln, Wanda (James) Hyland Isler of Georgetown and Gerald Hyland of Milton; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister and brother, Elizabeth Carter of Delmar, Md., and Fred Hyland of Wilmington; five sisters-in-law and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Saturday at New Zion U.M. Church in Laurel, where friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. and again on Saturday, one hour prior to service. Masonic rites will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will be in Zion U.M. Church Cemetery in Sharptown, Md. Funeral services are entrusted to Jolley Memorial Chapel of Salisbury, Md. Visit delmarvanow.com
