William C. Philips II

DOVER - William C. Philips II, born in Wilmington on Aug. 2, 1918, was a descendant of the early Quakers and Swedes of this area and son of Edward Mendinhall Philips and Bertha Cranston Philips. He was a graduate of Wilmington Friends School and attended Swarthmore College. During World War II, he served as a Seaman 3rd Class in the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and taught ship construction and blueprint reading at the Dravo Shipyards; later he served in the US Army during the occupation of Germany as a Staff Sergeant. He was retired from the DuPont Company. Although he spent most of his life in Wilmington, his most recent home was in Dover. He was a long time member of Greenbank Mill Associates and Wilmington Friends Meeting. He is the widower of Frances Murphy Philips and father of the late Sharon P. Jarenski. His dear friend and companion, Edith Howarth, passed away three years ago. He is survived by his children, Diane P. Rector of Newark, William C. Philips III of Dover, Deborah L. Philips of Wilmington and Carol A. Stoyack of Glenmoore, Pa., and five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. A memorial will be held on Friday morning at 10 a.m., at Wilmington Friends Meeting House at 4th and West Streets. Burial will follow at Wilmington & Brandywine Cemetery, Wilmington. In lieu of flowers, a donation to Ministry of Caring, 506 N.
