The West Salisbury Elementary School saga has been resolved, with all sides declaring victory.

At the urging of County Executive Bob Culver and with the agreement of the county school board and administration, a new 350-student school will be build at the current West Road and Adventist Drive site.

The design will make it possible for the school to expand, should school officials eventually decide a 650-student school is what’s needed for that portion of the county.

Culver, who has been pointed at times in his assessment of school board plans, earlier this month lauded school officials who he said “sharpened their pencils” to reduce construction expenses.

The estimated price tag is $28.4 million -- $13.1 million will come from the county via bond sales, with another $15.3 million being financed by the state.

Maryland school construction overseers -- the Interagency Committee on Public School Construction -- needs to approve the project, which would then advance to the state Board of Public Works for ultimate approval. Ground-breaking could come as early as spring.

When construction begins, West Salisbury’s student population will occupy the nearby Choices Academy building.
