Wells: Open primaries are long overdue in Delaware

Posted

I strongly support allowing unaffiliated voters to vote in Delaware’s primary elections (“Let’s open primaries to unaffiliated voters”). What a great idea! In a state like ours that is dominated by one party, the closed primaries force us to affiliate with a party to fully participate in selecting our elected officials, which skews that party’s dominance even further.

Opening primaries to unaffiliated voters would allow us to fully participate without declaring a political party that we don’t truly identify with. It would help elect candidates who more fully reflect the beliefs of the general population they represent.

Come on, General Assembly, get behind and pass House Bill 188!
