Ware: More could afford housing if lending practices changed

Posted

I work in real estate in Sussex County, and though I do not normally handle showing houses, I understand the barriers that working adults face. Mostly, lenders lack the leeway to approve mortgages that the majority of the community can afford. We can authorize 40-year mortgages and guarantee approvals for young families actively living and working in Sussex County.

Instead of trying to force affordable housing on developers, let’s take the other route and change our lending practices. People constantly discuss interest rates and affordable down payments, but what good are these factors if no one lends the money?
